The Arts Department
Intermediate School 230 offers every student a robust arts program that develops expression and creativity through art making in music and the visual arts.
We offer 3-year Band and Chorus, as well as Visual Art courses that help students become lifelong lovers of the arts. Students will also be well prepared for high school including the competitive performance high schools such as Frank Sinatra School Of The Arts High School and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
All arts classes meet three days a week and each of the arts majors provide a variety of performances and exhibition opportunities including, concerts, parades, city-wide festivals, art shows, city-wide exhibitions, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are students placed in an arts major?
In 6th grade, students spend some time in each art major, experiencing the class and meeting some teachers, before making their choice.
Students then, with the help of their families and teachers, rank their choices. The vast majority of students get placed in their first choice. By November 1st, all sixth graders are settled in to their arts placement. To maintain consistency, students will remain in that art major through graduation.
Are there any fees?
